Welcoming Tim Howard to the Infrastructure & Drainage team

Welcome to the team

We’d like to take this opportunity to provide a very significant and warm welcome to Tim Howard, who joined the business last week as Principal Infrastructure Engineer having previously spent around 18 years at WSP, and previous to that as a Senior Engineer for Redrow Homes Plc.

Tim joins us at a particularly exciting time in our company’s story; having recently completed our brand relaunch we are investing heavily in our people as much as in our expertise.  Tim not only brings with him enormous expertise to help furnish our expanding portfolio of work, but also exciting ideas about mentoring and training of all colleagues throughout our business.

It’s a real passion of Tim’s to share his expertise with others so that they might get the most out of their career, and so we couldn’t think of anyone better to invite to take over and develop our training programme.

Speaking of Tim’s arrival, Will Whiting (Head of Infrastructure & Drainage) commented:

“Tim is a fantastic addition to our growing infrastructure offering and I am excited to be working with him to help shape the future of the team. He not only brings an enviable skillset with him, but also the kind of commercial application that we pride ourselves on at Calibro. It speaks volumes that the business is able to attract someone of Tim’s stature and I have no doubt that, with his support, the Infrastructure & Drainage team will increasingly be recognised as the trusted partner of choice for our housebuilder and commercial developer clients.”

The foundations to flourish

Aside from being a thoroughly nice chap, always happy to chat and lend his time, Tim is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 23 years’ experience in the design, construction and project management of residential and civil engineering schemes. The majority of Tim’s experience is in the design of highways and drainage for development infrastructure projects, from inception through to the detailed design stage and beyond, to their construction and maintenance.

Tim’s experience includes managing multi-disciplinary teams in the production of Section 38 and 278 agreements under the Highways Act, and Section 104 agreements under the Water Industry Act.  Tim’s multi-disciplinary experience means he is used to working with and balancing the requirements from different disciplines, including flood risk, transport and more generally to support the place-making agenda.

Tim has spent much of his career working for housing developers, either as consultant or in-house engineer, but has also undertaken several secondments to local authorities, working closely with their planning, development control and maintenance teams. This experience provides Tim with a unique perspective which allows him to foresee and overcome obstacles to protect the progress of his projects.

Tim’s take

Speaking of his first impressions, Tim comments that “he was first attracted to the business because of the refreshing approach to projects and clients,  but it was the casual and personable approach to the interview – over a cold pint on a summer’s day – that really validated what the business was about”

Tim continues: “The first week is always a slow start but I am already being made to feel part of the wider team, and being given the kind of responsibility to drive projects forward in my own way, even though this appears to be very similar to the ‘Calibro way'”.

Tim has also hit the ground running in relation to the Company’s Training and Mentoring programme, by reviewing individual’s capabilities and beginning to plan for one-to-one interviews to understand everyone’s long term aspirations. Tim explains:

“I worked through the beginning parts of my career without professional qualifications and it wasn’t until much later on that I realised the real value in being part of something coordinated and being able to learn from my peers.  For me, its now not just about doing the job for my clients but its about guiding and helping others to learn how to get more from their careers.”

The final say

Calibro prides itself on being a truly integrated infrastructure planning consultancy; meaning that our growth strategy and investment priorities are equally split across our specialisms of transport planning, flood risk & hydrology, and infrastructure and drainage.  The addition of Tim is another key element of our investment strategy that will allow us to continue to grow our reputation as a consultant of choice for some of the Country’s most prestigious clients.
